ന്യൂഡല്‍ഹി: ഇന്ത്യന്‍ കപ്പലുകള്‍ വിദേശതീരങ്ങളില്‍ കാണാതാവുന്നതില്‍ ആശങ്ക പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ച സുപ്രീംകോടതി അതുസംബന്ധിച്ച്‌ വിശദമായ സത്യവാങ്‌മൂലം സമര്‍പ്പിക്കാന്‍ കേന്ദ്രസര്‍ക്കാരിനോടാവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു.
കഴിഞ്ഞ സപ്‌തംബറില്‍ കോടതി നിര്‍ദേശിച്ചതനുസരിച്ച്‌ കേന്ദ്രം സമര്‍പ്പിച്ച റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ട്‌ തൃപ്‌തികരമല്ലെന്ന്‌ കോടതി കുറ്റപ്പെടുത്തി. മനുഷ്യന്റെ ജീവന്‌ സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ ഒരു വിലയും കല്‌പിക്കുന്നില്ലേ എന്ന്‌ വിമര്‍ശിക്കുകയും ചെയ്‌തു. സൊമാലിയയില്‍ കടല്‍ക്കൊള്ളക്കാരുടെ പ്രശ്‌നം നിലനില്‍ക്കുന്ന പശ്ചാത്തലത്തില്‍, കപ്പല്‍ കാണാതാവുന്ന കേസിന്‌ ഏറെ പ്രാധാന്യമുണ്ടെന്ന്‌ ജസ്റ്റിസുമാരായ ആര്‍.വി. രവീന്ദ്രന്‍, അല്‍ത്തമീസ്‌ കബീര്‍ എന്നിവരുള്‍പ്പെട്ട ബെഞ്ച്‌ വ്യക്തമാക്കി.
ജൂപ്പിറ്റര്‍ 6 എന്ന ടഗ്‌ ഷിപ്പ്‌ 2005 സപ്‌തംബറില്‍ ദക്ഷിണാഫ്രിക്കന്‍ കടല്‍ത്തീരത്ത്‌ കാണാതായ കേസില്‍ വാദം കേള്‍ക്കുകയായിരുന്നു കോടതി. അഞ്ചു മലയാളികളുള്‍പ്പെടെ 10 ഇന്ത്യക്കാരും മൂന്നു ഉക്രേനിയക്കാരുമാണ്‌ കപ്പലിലുണ്ടായിരുന്നത്‌. നാലുപേര്‍ ലക്ഷദ്വീപില്‍ നിന്നുള്ളവരാണ്‌. ഇവരുടെ ബന്ധുക്കളാണ്‌ കോടതിയെ സമീപിച്ചത്‌. ഉക്രെയിന്‍കാരായ തൊഴിലാളികള്‍ക്കും നഷ്‌്‌ടപരിഹാരം നല്‍കാന്‍ സുപ്രീംകോടതി നിര്‍ദേശിച്ചു.

കടലില്‍ പത്തേമാരി മുങ്ങി ഒരാളെ കാണാതായി
ചെറായി: കെട്ടിടനിര്‍മാണ സാമഗ്രികളുമായി ബേപ്പൂരില്‍നിന്നും ലക്ഷദ്വീപ് ആന്ത്രോത്തിലേക്ക്‌ പോകുകയായിരുന്ന പത്തേമാരി (ഉരു) ശക്തിയായ തിരമാലകളില്‍പ്പെട്ട്‌ മുങ്ങി നാലു ജീവനക്കാരില്‍ ഒരാളെ കാണാതായി. മറ്റു മൂന്നുപേരെ മീന്‍പിടിക്കാന്‍പോയ 'കാര്‍ത്തിക' എന്ന ബോട്ടുകാര്‍ രക്ഷപ്പെടുത്തി മുനമ്പത്തെത്തിച്ചു.
ശനിയാഴ്‌ച രാത്രി 11 മണിയോടെ താനൂര്‍ പടിഞ്ഞാറ്‌ ആഴക്കടലില്‍ വച്ച്‌ പലക തള്ളിപ്പോയതാണ്‌ അപകടത്തിന്‌ കാരണം.
തൂത്തുക്കുടി മരക്കുടി സീമ്പക്ക്‌ അല്‍ഫോണ്‍സി (30)നെയാണ്‌ കാണാതായത്‌. പത്തേമാരിയില്‍ ഭക്ഷണം പാകംചെയ്യുന്ന ജോലിക്കാരനാണ്‌ അല്‍ഫോണ്‍സ്‌.
ഒപ്പമുണ്ടായിരുന്ന ഡ്രൈവര്‍ മംഗലാപുരം കുതിരാവലി അന്തോണി അപ്പയുടെ മകന്‍ വിന്‍സെന്റ്‌ (41), സഹോദരന്‍ ജോണ്‍സണ്‍ (44), തൂത്തുക്കുടി ഫാത്തിമ നഗര്‍ സ്വദേശി ഭാസ്‌കര്‍ ഫെര്‍ണാണ്ടസ്‌ (40) എന്നിവരെയാണ്‌ രക്ഷപ്പെടുത്തിയത്‌.
അപകടത്തിനുശേഷം മൂവരും കടലില്‍ നീന്തിത്തുടിക്കുമ്പോഴായിരുന്നു താനൂര്‍ പടിഞ്ഞാറ്‌ ഭാഗത്തുവച്ച്‌ ബോട്ടുകാര്‍ കണ്ടെത്തിയത്‌.

Koya disqualified from Lok Sabha membership
New Delhi, Jan 12 (PTI) A Janata Dal (United) MP from Lakshadweep, P P Koya, who defied party whip by remaining absent during the crucial trust vote in Lok Sabha in July last, has been disqualified, it was officially announced today.
Soon after Koya flouted the party whip which asked all members to remain present in the House and vote against the motion, he was suspended by the party which initiated disqualification proceedings against him.

MPEDA to focus on tuna export in Lakshadweep .
The Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) has embarked on a project to utilise tuna resources. It has focused on converting 1,000 fishing vessels to tuna long liners.
There are schemes providing subsidies for conversion of existing fishing vessels to tuna long liners, interest subsidy for resource- specific tuna long liners.A proposal for the development of tuna fishery in Lakshadweep is under consideration. It is expected that India will have a very large efficient and effective fleet of tuna long liners by 2012 and become one of the world leaders in the supply
of tuna especially the high value tuna.

A new report by the United States Geological Survey suggests that the world faces “the possibility of much more rapid climate change than previous studies have suggested.” The report, commissioned by the US Climate Change Science Programme, says that in the light of recent ice sheet melting rates, global sea levels could rise as much as 4 feet (1.2 metres) by 2100!
The report is based on the latest published evidence on four specific threats for the 21st century. It has surveyed studies that were not available to the United Nation’s (UN’s) Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fourth Assessment Report, 2007, which explored similar questions.
The IPCC had projected a rise of no more than 1.5 feet by 2100. But satellite data over the last two years show the world’s major ice sheets are melting much more rapidly than previously thought. The Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets are losing an average of 48 cubic miles of ice a year, equivalent to twice the amount of ice in the entire Alps.
It seems the models used by the IPCC did not factor in the fact that warmer ocean water under coastal ice sheets accelerates melting.
What does this mean for the approximately 600 million people living in low lying coastal areas? The world’s top tourist destinations that could face problems include coral islands like the Maldives and Lakshadweep – many of whose islands are less than one metre above sea-level – coastal destinations like Goa (a quarter of the State’s coastal areas is low-lying), Florida, New Orleans as well as the Mekong Delta in South-East Asia.

ദേശീയ സ്‌കൂള്‍ അത്‌ലറ്റിക്‌സ്: നാല് ടീമുകള്‍ എത്തി
കൊച്ചി: അമ്പത്തിനാലാമത് ദേശീയ സ്‌കൂള്‍സ് അത്‌ലറ്റിക് ചാമ്പ്യന്‍ഷിപ്പിനായി കൊച്ചിയിലേക്ക് ടീമുകള്‍ എത്തിത്തുടങ്ങി. ഏഴിന് തുടങ്ങുന്ന ദേശീയ മീറ്റിനായി നാല് ടീമുകളാണ് ഞായറാഴ്ച കൊച്ചിയില്‍ എത്തിയത്.
ഞായറാഴ്ച രാത്രിയോടെ ഗൊരഖ്പൂര്‍ എക്‌സ്പ്രസില്‍ മധ്യപ്രദേശ് ടീമും കൊച്ചിയില്‍ എത്തി. ലക്ഷദ്വീപ് ടീമും ഞായറാഴ്ച എത്തിച്ചേര്‍ന്നു. അനൗദ്യോഗികമായാണെങ്കിലും ഹിമാചല്‍ പ്രദേശിന്റെ ടീമിലെ പകുതി അംഗങ്ങളും ഇപ്പോള്‍ കൊച്ചിയിലുണ്ട്
