Koya disqualified from Lok Sabha membership

New Delhi, Jan 12 (PTI) A Janata Dal (United) MP from Lakshadweep, P P Koya, who defied party whip by remaining absent during the crucial trust vote in Lok Sabha in July last, has been disqualified, it was officially announced today.

Soon after Koya flouted the party whip which asked all members to remain present in the House and vote against the motion, he was suspended by the party which initiated disqualification proceedings against him.

Speaker Somnath Chatterjee disqualified him by an order on January nine, 2009 under the anti-defection act. PTI SPG SMI DKS 01121914 DELHI

MPEDA to focus on tuna export in Lakshadweep .


The Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) has embarked on a project to utilise tuna resources. It has focused on converting 1,000 fishing vessels to tuna long liners.
There are schemes providing subsidies for conversion of existing fishing vessels to tuna long liners, interest subsidy for resource- specific tuna long liners.A proposal for the development of tuna fishery in Lakshadweep is under consideration. It is expected that India will have a very large efficient and effective fleet of tuna long liners by 2012 and become one of the world leaders in the supply
of tuna especially the high value tuna.
